Artwork

When I took up portrait painting after a hiatus of many years, I started with very small portraits of children using minimal color. These eventually developed into larger and more ambitious paintings. Meanwhile, I noticed mug shots in the local paper of young criminals barely older than these elementary school children. It seemed to me that it was mostly circumstance that separated these two groups, so I wanted to paint them all as having a common humanity. It is important to me to convey a sense of the person that I am painting.

Rocks have appeared often in my still life paintings over many years. After collecting interesting rocks in my travels in Morocco, Greece, Italy and closer to home in California, I began making what I thought of as rock portraits. This then lead to using rocks as compositional elements in more complex works. Rocks continue to interest me for their elemental quality and their infinite visual variety.

Statement

The illusion of three-dimensional form, space and light on a two dimensional surface has always seemed magical to me. To create this in my work I use traditional media and techniques.
